VLA's founder, Kasey L. (Peake) Prato, graduated in the top 8% of her class at the University of Miami School of Law in 2004. While in law school, she was a member of the Inter-American Law Review and was selected to intern at the Supreme Court of Florida where she prepared memoranda of law concerning Supreme Court jurisdiction. Ms. Prato completed her undergraduate studies, magna cum laude, in International Business at the College of Charleston in her home state of South Carolina and is admitted to the Bar in Florida, South Carolina and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Upon graduation from law school, Ms. Prato began her career working in the Miami office of Carlton Fields, an AmLaw 200 law firm, where her practice focused on complex commercial and insurance litigation. While with Carlton Fields, Ms. Prato gained significant experience with all aspects of civil litigation in both state and federal court including extensive research and writing, discovery, depositions, hearings, trial preparation and appellate work. She also volunteered with the firm’s United Way fundraising efforts, Election Protection and assisted with a variety of pro bono projects.
Following several years in private practice, Ms. Prato went on to serve as Bar Counsel to The Florida Bar in Miami where she was responsible for the investigation and prosecution of attorney ethics grievances. During her tenure with the Bar, Ms. Prato served as first-chair counsel in numerous trials and appeals and held primary responsibility for complex, multi-party, high-profile litigation. In addition, she made presentations regarding ethics and discipline at Practicing with Professionalism seminars for newly admitted Florida lawyers.
Before founding VLA, Ms. Prato served as an appellate counsel in the statewide firm of Conroy Simberg where she prepared appellate briefs in the areas of general liability and workers’ compensation and provided litigation support, with an emphasis on the drafting of dispositive motions, to the firm’s 100+ attorneys.
In addition to her legal experience, Ms. Prato has worked as a professional editor assisting writers with legal, scientific and academic articles for publication. Currently, she is also serving as a mentor to students in countries around the world through Law Without Walls (LWOW), a global academic program founded at the University of Miami and now encompassing 30 law and business schools, where students collaborate in virtual teams to offer innovative solutions to cutting edge issues at the intersection of law, business and technology.
